Gregg August has been an Instructor of String Bass in the Music Department at UConn since 2003. His playing spans the jazz, Latin jazz, classical and avant-garde scenes. A sought-after composer and arranger, August has played with Ray Barretto, Ornette Coleman, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo O’Farrill, James Moody, and Lincoln Center’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, among others. As a classical bassist, he frequently performs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and the American Composer’s Orchestra. He has also been traveling to Cuba over the last fifteen years to play jazz. In 2014, he recorded an album in Havana entitled Cuba: The Conversation Continues, as bassist for Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. One of the tracks that he played on the album “The Afro Latin Jazz Suite,” earned a 2016 Grammy Award for instrumental composition.
